"My work is more about your seeing than it is about my seeing, although it is a product of my seeing. I'm also interested in the sense of presence of space; that is space where you feel a presence, almost an entity - that physical feeling and power that space can give".
This installation of his was held at Dorotheenstadt cemetery in Berlin inside the small chapel which sits amongst the cemetery and gardens. This installation continued to play on his interests in light and space, and in this sense, using physical light from outside to work within the installation. The show begins at a specific time each evening (half an hour before sunset), just as the sun is about to set. At this stage the light within the chapel starts with a cool blue light which mimics the sky preparing to set. This then continues to change with the colours hosted in the sky that evening, mimicking its developments in colour. Turrell designed this using a slight optical illusion in that when the sunset's light comes through the opaque windows, these appear different colours depending on how the chapel is lit inside. This was really interesting to experience first hand, being able to glance outside whilst the lights inside were also changing, seeing the similarities between the two.
