OUGD502 - Berlin Trip - Studio Yukiko

Studio Yukiko are another design duo from Berlin, founded by Michelle Phillips and Johannes Conrad, who specialise in graphic design, creative direction, and art direction for print, photography and digital media. They describe their practice as 'imaginative and progressive ideas combined with fine visual sensibility and a unique style'. One piece of work they talked about during our visit was their 'Lauf Nicht Renn' campaign design for Nike. In the development of this campaign, the duo produced a large quantity of designs, making small changes and manipulations to content, composing them in various ways. This gave me an insight into the studio's design process and taught me the importance of having multiple ideas and visualising these digitally to see works and what doesn't work. This also taught me that this is an important process when working for clients since they may prefer certain designs which you yourself may not be as happy with, therefore you should not cut out designs from your pitch because you think they're bad - design is ultimately subjective.

Another body of work the studio showed us were their designs for Flaneur magazine. This is an independent magazine which focuses on city streets, a different one for each issue and embraces their fragmented nature in the world. The magazine content is sourced and commissioned from artists and designers around the world to help visualise the street specific to each issue. Through this, this further highlighted the importance of collaboration since it allows you to get work using processes and methods you potentially may not be able to do yourself. This has inspired me to make as many connections as I can now, which may come in useful in my future career.
