OUGD502 - Berlin Trip - Museum of Letters
The Museum of Letters (Buchstabenmuseum) in Berlin is the world's first museum to collect old and disused letterforms from public spaces, working towards their preservation and documentation as part of urban history. The museum is home to over 1,000 letters and typographic forms, even some famous ones which were previously used in films such as Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglorious Bastards', the only letter 'E' to survive the explosion of the Le Gamaar cinema in the film. It was really interesting to see the range of type the museum had collected and learning about where these had come from, giving an insight into the typographic characteristics which were chosen to be used in certain brands and the reasons behind these. This visit showed me the importance of typography within both design and its history, and is something I could potentially experiment with more within my work and its form, for instance 3-dimensional type.
