The aim of this research poster was to reflect on responses to set independent tasks, activities and an overall personal reflection on what I have learnt throughout the first year of this course. The poster communicates two key things learnt, two things I have engaged with, aims and ambitions for Level 5 and two key things I have not enjoyed.
Key things learnt:
I decided to communicate these aims within the design of the poster itself. The visibility of the grid guides was used to show the importance of structure and grid systems within layout in order to create hierarchy of information and consistency within design. The use of bold, overlapping type has also been used to communicate the importance of type within design. From the beginning of this course, I learnt many new typographic terms which has helped me to talk about typography in a more informed manner. It has also taught me the importance of type choice, size and weight and how the different effects this can have on an overall design.
Although I express an interest in the handmade, analog processes, this poster was created digitally in order to show my new found skills and knowledge of adobe softwares, such as illustrator and indesign which I had no previous knowledge of before starting this course.
Key things that have been engaging:
- Studio talks and visiting professionals. Such talks have given me much valuable advice on what it takes to become a graphic designer, set up your own studio and in general, pursue a career in graphic design. It has taught me things such as, to just be yourself. Have a style which is distinctive and sets you apart from everyone else, and do not be afraid to experiment with new ways of working.
- Research stages of each brief have also been engaging. These have taught me that research does not have to be boring, but the more obscure information creates for stronger ideas and concepts. Accompanying study tasks have also shown me new ways of working and producing experimental work and ideas quickly through methods such as ascii art and alternative softwares.
Key things not enjoyed:
- Although all help to inform our overall creative practice, the workload can sometimes be quite overwhelming which means that work is sometimes rushed or pushed back to make way for a more important piece of work. From this I have learnt to manage my time better so that everything gets done at an appropriate time and to a good standard.
Aims and ambitions for Level 5:
- To work on more self-led briefs in my spare time. This will help me in terms of developing my own personal creative practice, figuring out my own style and eventually building up a good body of work to develop into a portfolio which does not simply consist of module briefs.
- To pay more visits to the library for research, instead of relying mostly on the internet for information as this can sometimes be limiting and inaccurate. As a part of this, I will also read more graphic design books for pleasure to inform my knowledge of graphic design as a creative practice which can help inform future ideas.
