OUGD402 - Studio Brief 02 - Logo Development

The image below shows the chosen logo design. It makes use of my three initials 'M.L.K' however some parts of the letterforms have been cut away in order to reflect one of the processes I am interested in which is handmade collage and links back to the 'Cut' element of my concept pay-off and description. The 'L' also acts as a space between the 'M' and 'K' as to not make the logo too similar to well-known brands with the same initials, whilst also giving a breather between the two letterforms. The way the 'K' has been cut resembles an arrow which can also be reflective of my progression on the course and within my own creative practice, including my ongoing experimentation and exploration of new methods and ideas. The use of Helvetica within this logo was chosen to convey another part of my personality which shows me as a perfectionist, therefore decided to use a clean, modern typeface to represent this idea.

Using a traditional, handmade print method, I used this final developed logotype to produce into a stamp. This involved the use of lino block printing, whereby I cut the logo into the lino by hand. I then used black ink to stamp this onto various papers. This further enhances the handmade concept behind my studio brief 2 work. Based on this print, I decided to use this as the basis of my logo, as the texture and handmade touch made it seem more personal and unique to myself as a designer and could potentially appeal to clients and studios in that they will be receiving something unique, as not every print would be the same. This also means the stamp is portable and means anything could become a business card, however for this to work the stamp would need to be further developed so that it includes a contact email or number, as currently it is simply my logo.
