OUGD602 - Contacting Design Studios (She Was Only)

6B2 / 6C2 / 6D2.

As another part of my creative practice I am interested in print and publication design. She Was Only is a boutique design studio based in London, specialising in publication design as well as brand identity, "devoted to simplicity, filtering out distraction to create impactful and purposeful work for a global client list of ambitious brands" by which they mean that they always put a lot of time in at the start of a project to get to the core of what the client is trying to say, then aim to deliver work which conveys this message in a clean and uncluttered way. No distractions.

How did I contact them?

Since this email was a proposal for a placement between a few days to a week, this email was a lot longer in comparison to others I had previously sent to other studios inquiring about day visits. However, this email took on similar strategies in creating an effective cover letter. One of these was, again, the inclusion of a punchy subject line in order to grab the attention of the receiver, this time playing on She Was Only's design philosophy in creating impactful and purposeful work through the subject "Here To Create An Impact" suggesting a shared philosophy as well as signifying the fact I could also be of some use to their team.

As an extension of this, another strategy used was talk about what I would gain from the experience, leading on to then talk about my own creative practice, discussing examples of my own work which I thought linked to She Was Only studio's creative practice to show why I would be a good candidate to consider having for work experience as well as further highlighting the benefit this would give myself as a designer.

As another implementation of my personal branding, my email picture was changed to my logo before sending this email in order to make this seem more professional rather than personal.

In addition, I added a small portfolio of some of my work in order to showcase some of the work I discussed within the email, and to give the studio an insight into the kind of work I can produce and my strengths as a designer. This portfolio was tailor-made for the studio, picking out projects which I thought linked the best with She Was Only's creative practice, again to highlight how I would fit culturally into their team. These included a few images of each project with the name of the project and a short, one sentence description of what it was about, allowing room for me to discuss this with them further if they so wish.

My Instagram and website handles were also added to the bottom right-hand corner of each page of this portfolio which meant the studio could find more of my work if they so wished.

Outcome:

Unfortunately due to the small size of the studio, they notified me that they do not have the sufficient team or resources to take on placements. However it was interesting to know that all portfolios they receive will be kept on file if their situation ever did change, potentially giving me a chance to work with them in the future.
