OUGD602 - Contacting Print Studios

6B2 / 6C2 / 6D2.

As a part of my creative practice I have interests in print media and methods of production, undertaking various screen-printing projects throughout my time on the course, as well as experimenting with lino and mono printing. However, one traditional print process I have not had the chance to explore whilst at university is the riso printing process. For this reason, it was decided to contact a few different riso printing studios in order to see if I could partake in work experience for one or two days in order to learn about how the process works, as well as experiencing first hand the day-to-day running of a small independent print (and in some cases, also publishing, studio).

The riso print studios I decided to contact were:

- Friends In The Dungeon.
- Housework Press (print and publishing).
- Jumbo Press.

How did I contact them?

None of these print studios supplied a telephone number on their websites, therefore the best way to contact these studios were via email (preferred) or social media. Taking lessons from the session on how to create an effective cover letter, the subject line used a playful caption "A Pressing Matter", which was done in order to help my email stand out amongst the rest, playing on the means of these studios' creative practices as well as communicating that I have a burning matter at hand that I want to speak to them about, also making the email seem urgent so that they see it and have to open.

Taking other lessons from this same session on the art of the cover letter, within the email I have spoken a little about my practice, outlining a project I have undertaken which relates to what they do, therefore suggesting how I would fit culturally into their team. I have also mentioned what I would gain from the experience, showing them I am keen to engage with their practice.

Due to the studios all being very similar with nothing much standing them apart and the request from myself being the same, it was decided to send the same email to each studio, only changing a few details each time in order to create a base email which could then be tailored where needed in sending this to each individual studio.
